While ICTs have their limitations, they also have numerous advantages and possibilities.
- Addressing learner preferences- Distance learning programs provide greater choice of when to study, increased self-reliance and improved computer literacy. They provide frequency and repetition of contact. Distance learning programs can also be tailored to meet the needs of specific groups.
- Medium of exchange of opinions- ICTs provide an international platform for artistic and cognitive expression, contribution and sharing. Timely interaction between and among computer users also allows convenient and “contemplated” exchanges.
- Overcoming geographic and social barriers- Social cues such as gender, race, rank, physical appearance and so on are filtered out. Information can be broadcast globally without any social or economic distinctions.
- Greater access to information- : ICTs provide convenient individual information-searching through a vast array of information sources. There are convenient storage facilities for text, graphics, audio, video, and data; and intermixing of media forms and content. There is also greater efficiency in sending and receiving information.
- Gender mainstreaming- Some projects such as SchoolNet Africa promote preferential treatment of women and the development of a cadre of women leaders as part of a strategy for raising awareness and challenging unequal gender power relations. One dedicated project, SchoolNets in Africa: The Female Face, documents stories of leading women digital pioneers in African education to demonstrate how ICTs have contributed to the empowerment of women.
